Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), established by the United Nations, aim to address global challenges such as poverty, inequality, education, and climate change. Achieving these goals requires active participation at the grassroots level, where cultural tools like indigenous films can play a pivotal role. Indigenous films, rooted in local traditions and languages, resonate with communities and serve as powerful tools for education, advocacy, and behavior change (Adamu & Yakubu, 2023). In Pankshin Local Government Area, Plateau State, indigenous films have been instrumental in raising awareness about sustainable agricultural practices, gender equality, and environmental conservation. By leveraging local storytelling traditions, these films align global SDG objectives with culturally relevant narratives, ensuring broader acceptance and implementation (Luka, 2024). This study explores the impact of indigenous films in promoting the SDGs within the Pankshin community.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite global efforts to achieve the SDGs, challenges persist in engaging rural communities, where literacy levels and exposure to mainstream media may be limited. Indigenous films, which are uniquely positioned to bridge this gap, remain underutilized in many areas, including Pankshin (Afolabi & Garba, 2023). This study seeks to understand the role of indigenous films in promoting awareness and action toward SDGs, addressing the gap in research on their effectiveness as advocacy tools.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze the themes of SDGs promoted in indigenous films in Pankshin.
  2. To assess the impact of indigenous films on community awareness and action toward SDGs.
  3. To evaluate the challenges and opportunities in using indigenous films for SDG advocacy.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What themes related to SDGs are commonly promoted in indigenous films in Pankshin?
  2. How do indigenous films influence community awareness and action toward SDGs?
  3. What are the challenges and opportunities in utilizing indigenous films for SDG advocacy?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Indigenous films effectively promote awareness of SDG-related themes in Pankshin.
  2. Indigenous films influence positive actions toward achieving SDGs in the community.
  3. Indigenous films face challenges such as limited funding and distribution in advocating for SDGs.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study underscores the potential of indigenous films as culturally relevant tools for promoting SDGs. The findings will benefit filmmakers, policymakers, and development agencies by highlighting strategies to harness local cinema for sustainable development initiatives.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is limited to the use of indigenous films as a medium for promoting SDGs in Pankshin Local Government Area, Plateau State.
