1.1 Background of the Study
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), established by the United Nations, aim to address global challenges such as poverty, inequality, education, and climate change. Achieving these goals requires active participation at the grassroots level, where cultural tools like indigenous films can play a pivotal role. Indigenous films, rooted in local traditions and languages, resonate with communities and serve as powerful tools for education, advocacy, and behavior change (Adamu & Yakubu, 2023). In Pankshin Local Government Area, Plateau State, indigenous films have been instrumental in raising awareness about sustainable agricultural practices, gender equality, and environmental conservation. By leveraging local storytelling traditions, these films align global SDG objectives with culturally relevant narratives, ensuring broader acceptance and implementation (Luka, 2024). This study explores the impact of indigenous films in promoting the SDGs within the Pankshin community.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite global efforts to achieve the SDGs, challenges persist in engaging rural communities, where literacy levels and exposure to mainstream media may be limited. Indigenous films, which are uniquely positioned to bridge this gap, remain underutilized in many areas, including Pankshin (Afolabi & Garba, 2023). This study seeks to understand the role of indigenous films in promoting awareness and action toward SDGs, addressing the gap in research on their effectiveness as advocacy tools.
